WIMMYC Spring 2023 DF95 Regatta - AMYA #223
Lake Tomah - May 20-21, 2023
Thomas Germanson, Regatta Coordinator

The inaugural DF95 regatta hosted by the Wisconsin, Illinois & Minnesota Model Yacht Club (WIMMYC) was an enjoyable sailing experience for sailors and spectators alike. Tomah area residents, family and friends were hosts to 15 participants and spouses. The WIMMYC extends our thanks to Jane & Mark, Heather, Jean, Siri, Rose, Krista, Mary, Sue, Seth, Cheryl, Carolyn, Jodie, Carol, Ann and Amy for what was countless hours of volunteer work of preparing homemade food, serving, clean up, providing donations, logistical support and race day assistance.

The WIMMYC appreciates the work of Joe from the City of Tomah's Park & Rec Department, Berta from the Tomah Chamber & Visitor Center, Steve from the local newspaper, Robin from the local radio station, Britnie from Tomah Health, Rylee at Murray's on Main restaurant and Pizza Hut staff. Their work facilitated a well run and enjoyable regatta.

Mother Nature provided seasonable spring weather with cool mornings and sunny days with highs around 70 degrees. The winds were favorable at a northwesterly 5-10 mph on Saturday and a westerly 5 mph on Sunday. Lake Tomah's Park Point Picnic Pavilion was a great place to shelter our operations, host meals and the award ceremonies. The pavilion's adjacent parking and port-a-potties were an added bonus for everyone. The combination of weather and facilities minimized downtime and as a result we were able to complete 32 races. Amazing!!

Our sincere thanks go to the experienced race committee of Patty Rohde, Jeff Gros, Clark Fremgen and Thomas Germanson. We had the control area on the main dock with a whiteboard to facilitate close communication, course changes and eliminate most navigation issues. See attached photographs with captions.

The regatta wouldn't have been possible without each of our dedicated sailors all of whom traveled long distances to participate (some from locations over 500 miles away). The sailing was competitive and respectful which you'll see in the attached race results where 11 out of 15 sailors each secured a top three finish. It was a learning opportunity for all of us and we were able to resolve disputes amicably on the water. This understanding between sailors eliminated time consuming hearings and promoted a more enjoyable sailing experience. Congratulations to each sailor!

Please know the weekend regatta was a success because of everyone's contributions and it could not have have happened without each of you! Thank you!! Next year's WIMMYC Spring DF95 2024 Regatta is tentatively scheduled for May 18-19, 2024.
