2023 IOM Region 2 Championship Regatta Report
by Dave Branning, Race Director
Twenty-two top level IOM skippers came to Lake Parsippany, NJ from the North East, the Midwest, the Southeast, Texas, Bahamas, Barbados, California as well as Paris, France. Quite the demographic among the class that loves to travel to compete with the best. This is a most pleasurable and talented skipper group I've ever had a chance to be part of and a joy to observe the best at top-level racing.
We used the IOM class ranking list to form two seeding heats and then launched two days of HMS racing on long courses efficiently set up and adjusted by Jon Elmaleh both days. These guys love long courses especially when the walking path allows full course view of "hot" mark roundings.
Both days we had a bit of a wait for wind but we were able to execute 10 full races on Saturday in fresh high-A breeze and 5 on Sunday in mid-A breeze. Tony Gonsalves, Steve Landeau, Peter Feldman, and Mark Golison established themselves at the top with Gonsalves holding a 15-point comfortable lead over Steve Landeau in second after day one. Day two, after a short delay, Tony Gonsalves opened with his two regatta throw-outs, but settled in again with a 3, 1, 4 to finish the regatta two points up on Peter Feldman. Peter chalked up three firsts on Sunday to move over Steve Landeau by 14-points to capture second place. Seven different skippers recorded at least one first place with Tony winning six and Peter winning four.
The highlight of the regatta was the Corinthian Award skipper, eleven-year-old, Eli Miller, Skip Miller's son. Eli sailed extremely well, stayed out of trouble, showed excellent boat handling and will be a force to reckon with in the future. Congratulations, Eli!
