2023 DF65 National Championship Regatta (NCR)
by Ron Stephanz
The 2023 DF65 NCR was held in Punta Gorda, Fl hosting 22 skippers from FL, TX, MD, and NC. Winds cooperated on Saturday ranging from 3-16mph. With a mostly northerly direction Don Ouimette brought out his "robo buoys" that served as the starting line, windward mark and the downwind gate. Between races if there was a wind shift, one button-click on his laptop rotated the entire course to keep everything square to the wind. No delays in moving buoys by hand. The racing was tight and at the end of Saturday after 11 races Bruce Farr had 17 pts and held a one point lead over Barr Batzer. John Mowry was in third at 28 pts. Sunday was not as cooperative, with fickle light winds that eventually disappeared to glass after lunch. All told we sailed 16 races using the HMS format. Barr managed to slip past Bruce while John held onto third.
