Regatta Report: 2023 Beesleys Point RC Laser Regatta Oct 1st
Submitted by Dave Branning, Regatta Director and PRO
The South Jersey Model YC held its first regatta for RC Lasers at an open water venue on Great Egg Harbor Bay in Marmora, NJ. After a week of rain and flooding all over the coastal towns, fifteen skippers were treated to a beautiful day, high water and a perfect NNE B-Sail wind direction.
The morning was owned by Point Pleasant's, Sean Bradley. Sean reeled off five firsts and one second (an ultimate throw-out) at the break. Jon Elmaleh, owner of Out There Technologies, the builder of the RC Laser, and a multi-time North American and National RC Laser Champion, was not far behind and had his two ultimate throw outs for the day to keep it very close.
After lunch, Jon had a bunch of firsts with Sean sailing his worst race of the day, a third. Sean won the regatta by one net point over Jon and, between them, won all the races. In third places was local skipper, John Santoro with Tim Aubert, from Central Park MYC, in a borrowed boat, third. Local fleet stalwart, Cape May Ray, rounded out the top five.
One afternoon race, after only three boats made it around the weather mark, the wind just stopped for several minutes and everyone stood still bobbing in the chop. We abandoned that race and waited a few minutes for it to fill in again.
Thanks to John Parker for delivering our chase boat and to Caleb and his mom, Jessica Yorke, for help with chase boat rescues and buoy movement. Thanks to John Santoro and Jon Elmaleh for perfecting the course as the wind occasionally played with us when the tide changed mid-day. Appreciate several in the local fleet for their help and to Elaine Hepkin who efficiently made the lunch and prize presentation happen so elegantly. A tip of the hat to Glenn Chalder, who traveled the farthest and brought the morning donuts.
Finally, thanks to all the skippers who shared our first annual regatta and especially to Judy Bonanno, Head Chick in Charge, for her eZ Regatta Pro electronic scoring and all her great pictures in the following link.
